  • Researchers at UCC have successfully developed DNA vaccines

    UCC LogoResearchers at UCC have successfully developed DNA vaccines that can target prostate cancer, it was revealed today.

    Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Centre at UCC have been working on DNA vaccines to activate the immune system against the cancer, and their successful work in the laboratory will now proceed to human clinical trials.

    The research is published today in the international journal Genetic Vaccines and Therapy.

    CAO points likely to rise due to record demand for places

    A RECORD number of students have applied for college places this year, which could lead to a dramatic increase in Central Application Office (CAO) points for some courses.

    The CAO estimates that 72,500 had applied by yesterday’s initial deadline, the highest figure on record. It compares to 66,500 for this time last year – an increase of about 10 per cent.

    Students from two Athlone secondary schools participated in the development of a new arts degree to be offered by Athlone Institute of Technology from this September. According to the Head of Humanities at AIT, Dr Marian Fitzgibbon, the students’ feedback was of considerable assistance in improving the new course.
